Foundational ND Terms
AuDHD
Short for Autism + ADHD. Refers to individuals who are both autistic and have ADHD traits, often with a unique overlap of sensory, social, and executive function needs.
Neurodivergent (ND)
A term used to describe individuals whose brain functions differently from the typical (or “neurotypical”) standard—often includes autism, ADHD, dyslexia, OCD, anxiety, and more.

Related terms:

Neurotype
Your brain’s natural style of thinking, feeling, processing, and interacting. Everyone has a neurotype—Tophr uses 9 workplace-focused neurotypes for better understanding and support.

Related terms:

Neurotypical (NT)
Someone whose cognitive functioning aligns with societal expectations or developmental norms—often used as a contrast to neurodivergent.
Sensory Processing
How the brain interprets information from the senses (sight, sound, touch, etc.). Sensory differences can cause overstimulation or under-responsiveness in ND individuals.
Neuroinclusive Leadership
A leadership approach that recognizes neurodiversity in a team and intentionally designs communication, workflows, and expectations so different information-processing and working styles can succeed—focusing on strengths rather than forcing everyone into the same “generalist” mold.
Psychological Safety
A shared belief within a team that it’s safe to take interpersonal risks—asking questions, raising concerns, sharing ideas, or admitting mistakes—without fear of embarrassment, punishment, or negative career consequences.
Job Crafting
The proactive process where employees reshape aspects of their work—tasks, relationships, or how they interpret their role—to better align with their strengths, interests, and needs, improving fit and meaning without changing the job title.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
A research-based framework (developed by CAST) for designing learning and training that works for a wide range of people by offering flexibility in how learners access information, engage with content, and demonstrate understanding—useful for inclusive workplace training.
